Harry Derham has taken an early lead in the battle for the 2011 Harley Racing PPORA National Novice Riders' Championship.
Derham, the sixteen-year-old nephew of Champion National Hunt Trainer Paul Nicholls, has already amassed fourteen points in the series, which awards points to riders finishing in the first three in all Point-to-Point races with Novice Rider restrictions.
His first Point-to-Point ride on Takeroc at Wadebridge back in December resulted in the pair hitting the deck, but since then Derham has not finished out of the first two in five rides, winning on three occasions. He is currently seven points clear of his nearest rival Jack Greenall, who is also well bred for the job, being related to no fewer than three former Champion Riders - Lord Daresbury (his uncle) and his cousins Tom and Ollie Greenall.
Meanwhile, Alan Hill's improving seven-year-old Start Royal is the early pacesetter in the pointtopoint.co.uk/PPORA Young Horse Awards, heading the National table with 32 points, ten points clear of fellow South Midland Area-qualified seven-year-old Divine Intavention.
Latest standings for both awards are available now in our downloads section.
