Andre Chenier: the first of three winners at the meeting for Guy Brewer
The Badsworth & Bramham Moor meeting at Mordon on Saturday managed to get through the 7 race card despite heavy rain all afternoon.
One jockey who didn't mind the testing conditions was Coulton based Guy Brewer who had not ridden a winner at Mordon before Saturday's meeting but rode a treble, all trained by Mary Sowersby.
His first winner was on Andre Chenier on whom he was deputising for owner/rider Chris Cundall, who was unfortunately on call in his job as a vet but managed to get a running commentary from daughter Charlotte whilst he was dealing with a horse with colic. Andre Chenier had chased home Sonevafushi at Witton Castle last time, but had nothing of that calibre in this field and took up the running 3 out to steadily draw clear and beat the staying on Queenies Girl by 3 lengths.
Brewer's second winner was on River Line who won the 1st division of the Maiden to give owner Beverley Boocock her first winner for nine years. River Line led at the 13th and was challenged at the 2nd last by Find The Way, but stayed on best to win by 2 lengths.
His treble came courtesy of The Artful Fox who relished the soft going and won the concluding 2nd Maiden division by 15 lengths, much to the delight of owner Liz Verity who has had seven 2nd places in the last 2 seasons.
Jacqueline Coward strengthened her lead in the area jockeys championship with a double on Buy Onling in the Restricted (the pair quickened up well to lead at the 2nd last and then rallied gamely when challenged by George The Grey on the flat to win by 2 lengths), and Narciso who won the Ladies' Open (quickening nicely to lead at the last, the pair had to repel a renewed challenge from Serena Brotherton and Welcome To Unos and scored by half a length).
Twenty-year-old Sam Drake, who is based at Guisley near Leeds, rode her first winner on her own Knightsbridge King in the Confined race at rewarding odds of 20-1. The even money favourite Young Claude was never going well and was outpaced on the sharp track after a circuit, eventually pulling up at the 17th fence.
Oliver Greenall and Chorizo won their third race of the season in the Intermediate, coming clear in the straight to easily beat Browns Beck and maintain his four winner lead in the Men's National Championship.
Next weekend sees the Middleton meeting at Whitwell-on-the-Hill which has a first race time of 1.00pm and includes the prestigious Grimthorpe Gold Cup Mixed Open race.
