14 September 2010 Disqualification hands Wadlow first win

by Carolyn Tanner

Following some post-season enquiries held by the Disciplinary Panel of the BHA, four horses which finished first past the post during the 2009/10 campaign have been disqualified due to a prohibited substance being found in the blood samples taken at the respective meetings. Apart from the fact that each of the four owners is now £150 lighter in the pocket, there has been a significant outcome as far as the jockeys are concerned.

The disqualification of Underwriter from the Confined at Eyton on May 3 has handed the race to Broken Reed, whose rider Oliver Wadlow, 21, can now celebrate his first victory. Oliver, who is about to start his third year reading accountancy at Oxford Brookes University, is this week attending a Category ‘A' course at the British Racing School at Newmarket.

Having announced at the age of seven that he never wanted to sit on a pony again, it was not until he was 17 that he decided to get back in the saddle. A broken vertebra incurred in a fall failed to deter him, and he had his initial ride between the flags at the age of 18, while he spent his gap year working for Steve Wynne.

Balearic Star's demotion from the Confined at Bonvilston on April 24 means that John Mathias has lost one of his winners. He thus drops to 36, level with Jake Greenall, who therefore becomes joint runner-up in the national men's championship.

The race has been awarded to Micks Prospect, partnered by the now conditional, Tom David.

Another Welsh-based horse, Musique En Tete, has lost his Restricted success gained at Laleston on May 1. This went into the record books as Nick Williams's 100th winner between the flags, but a week later the jockey completed what has turned out to be his ‘proper' century on Synisterdexter at Lower Machen.

The beneficiary of Musique En Tete's disqualification is Plums And Apples, a third career victory for Mathew Barber.

The bad news for Guy Brewer is that he drops back to a career 99 Point-to-Point victories following Oojar's disqualification from the Maiden Division Two at the South Wold on March 13. The good news is the fact that he will have the excuse for another celebration when he boots home his first winner of the 2010/11 season.
The promoted Teeton Coral puts another success on the board for the now retired Stuart Morris, who finishes with a tally between the flags of 162.
