by Lucy Johnson

Devon kicks off the national Point-to-Point season at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday, November 29th and as the flag comes down on the first race of the season, so another seven months of scintillating action begins.

The 30 meetings in the Devon and Cornwall area make it the busiest of all the 14 regions in Britain and the sport is thriving. This weekend is no exception and the meeting has received over 140 entries. Area secretary Gordon Chambers, who trains Point-to-Pointers near Buckfastleigh, said: "Sunday's meeting has received a huge entry which is testament to the popularity of the pre Christmas meetings. Black Forest Lodge is an extremely popular track and it's great that the new season is going to begin on such a high."

He added: "We are extremely lucky in the area that there are so many meetings which are always well supported and extremely well organised."

The first of the eight races gets under way at 11.30am with a two and a half mile Open Maiden. This race has three divisions and each is sure to throw up some indicators for horses to follow for the rest of the season. Then there's a Novice Riders race followed by the Restricted. The Mixed Open is run at 2pm and has attracted a classy field of 22. Two divisions of the three mile Open Maiden conclude the card.

A spokesman from the course said: "We've had a lot of rain which we've welcomed as the track is on sandy soil and it's a well drained site. We don't anticipate any problems at all with the parking again because the course drains so well. All the fences have been refurbished but there aren't any major changes to the course. There's also a licensed bar, hot food and a hog roast."

The course is situated at Black Forest Lodge near Kenton off the A380 and will be signposted. Entrance is £20 per car and £10 pr car single occupancy. The first race is off at 11.30am.

The Devon and Cornwall Area has a new Facebook page - Point to Point - which will keep racegoers up to date with all the latest news.
