It is very difficult to believe that this season is the first time that Guy Brewer has been crowned Yorkshire's leading Gentleman Champion Rider.
A leading light on the Yorkshire Point-to-Point scene for many years, Brewer is also very well respected and feared by his contemporaries when travelling to the Northern or Midland areas. Renowned for his strong drive and getting the best out of his horses, Brewer is never short of rides, with horses coming from his own yard, which he runs with his wife Freya, and a long standing relationship with the Mary Sowersby yard; and of course any spares that he can find!
This year, Brewer took advantage of the introduction of the riders' sponsorship scheme and joined up with leading White Rose Saddlery, who are the North's specialists in racing and Point-to-Point equipment, and also sponsor the Yorkshire Ladies Championship Award. Guy said, "The sponsorship from White Rose Saddlery has been invaluable. I'm lucky in that I get a lot of rides each season but the down side is that I get through a lot of kit! White Rose Saddlery have been a big help in providing the kit for me and I am honoured to carry their branding." Wendy Hoggard, proprietor of White Rose Saddlery said "I have known Guy for a long time and as soon as the rider sponsorship opportunity became available I knew he was the jockey that I wanted to represent me. It has been a pleasure working more closely with Guy this season and the leading Gentleman Rider Award is the icing on the cake."
Brewer has always taken a keen interest in Point-to-Pointing and had his first ride at the age of 21 in the 1994/1995 season. In 1999, Brewer was the leading Yorkshire Novice Gentleman and although he has come close a number of times (even going into the last day of the 2006 season in the lead but losing out as his horse ran out at the second last fence, leaving Ben Woodhouse in second place in the title race to win the race and therefore the Championship) it is only this year that he has come out on top. In total, Brewer has had 109 Point-to-Point wins and 12 Hunter Chase wins - The Yorkshire Point-to-Point scene is still awaiting the 100 winners' party!
