Recent rainfall has inspired a gigantic entry of 184 horses, and a 30 minute earlier first race time of 11.00am, for the Cambridgeshire Harriers Hunt Club Point-To-Point at Cottenham on New Year's Eve.

This represents at 230 per cent increase on the first meeting of the season at the Cambridge venue, on November 27, which attracted just 80 entries. Since then farmers' prayers have been answered and around an inch of rain has fallen meaning that the advance going is ‘good to firm'.

The New Year's Eve fixture will now get under way with a 17-entry Club Members Race at 11.00am and run through until 2.00pm, when race seven, a 2m4f Maiden, is scheduled to come under orders.

However, that finale has 38 horses engaged and a maximum field size of 16, while the three mile Maiden has 30 possible runners and a safety factor of 18, so there is every chance that these events, not to mention the Countryside Alliance Novice Riders Race (29 entered, safety factor of 20), may have to be divided on the day.

Cottenham is four miles north of Cambridge near the B1049, post code CB24 8RG. It is best approached using junction 33 of the A14.

Take the A10 signed for Ely, then take the third left (after the Park and Ride and the Recycling Centre) to Landbeach. Go straight through the village of Landbeach, past the playing field, and take the first left out the other side. The course is half a mile further down this road.

Admission will be charged at £10 per head with children under 17 allowed in for free.
