Organisers of the Dart Vale & Haldon Harriers Point-to-Point on Saturday (March 19) will bid farewell to long serving Huntsman Gilmore Lewis, who retires in April after 51 seasons in Hunt service, 37 of which were spent with the Dart Vale.

Mr Lewis will lead the outrider team for the last ever time and also parade the hounds.

The Point-to-Point promises to provide an action packed day with two pony races beginning at 12pm before seven races, featuring the Devon & Cornwall Area Classic sponsored by the Totnes and Bridgetown Race Company Ltd, commencing at 1pm.

An above average race is in prospect for the Classic with some of the region's best open horses among the 16 Entries. They include recent Great Trethew winner Bishy Barnaby and Whizzaar, who won a Hunter Chase at Taunton earlier this month. Another entry is Oscatello, who was an impressive winner at the course in February, but he's more likely to take up his engagement in Friday's Christie's Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

The eight in the Connolly's Red Mills Intermediate include Monkerty Tonkerty, a winner at Treborough on Sunday with his Owner / Trainer Jessica Woodward on board. Cappoquin was second in a decent intermediate at Bishop's Court earlier this month and is capable of winning and the Keith Cummings-trained Certain Flight has won two this season and could make it a hat trick.

The 15 in the Confined race for Novice Riders include Dare Too Dream, a winner of a Confined at Great Trethew on heavy going, along with Rockwithacaveman who has been hugely consistent in the past for connections.

Entries in the Restricted include plenty of horses who have won their Maiden races this season, including Alysia's Flame, Curtain Razer, Diamond Supreme, Geneva Lake, Hereweareagain and Prudent George.

A Hunt race kicks off the card and Entries include Josiah Bay who was second at the weekend at Treborough Hill in a Maiden won by Kirkleigh, as well as the consistent Karinga Coin.

The Open Maiden race has been split into two divisions with 21 in each with Valaroso looking to have solid form in the first. He was second at the course last month and third-placed Kirkleigh has since won.

Entrance to the course is £20 per car and occupants, £10 per car and driver, £7 per pedestrian. As well as the racing, catering, tradestands, bookies and a licensed bar will all add to the fun of the day.
