10 March 2009 Report: Derwent - Charm Park

WILLYWONT HE: and Steven Charlton won the Members

The Derwent hunt held its point to point near Wykeham on Sunday and saw 77 horses turn out to take their chance on a 7 race card.

The highlight of the day saw the Easterby and Greenall team dominating yet again, with Tom Greenall riding two winners for David Easterby and one for Cherry Coward who both had two winners, with Toby Greenall taking the fourth win.

The first of Tom Greenall's treble came in the Confined race on Unjust Law, the pair settled well in midfield and eventually made progress through the field and two out were still on the bridle, the long time leader Glenelly Gale was given an excellent ride from Rebecca Mason, they tried to make all the running and looked the only danger to Unjust Law, however the Greenall mount had too much in hand and kicked on to win comfortably by six lengths from Glenelly Gale with favourite Over To Joe who never travelled with much fluency staying on to take third.

Greenall's second winner came in the Restricted under the highly respected My Old Piano who was heavily backed. Greenall had to earn his fee as Elusive Swallow took up the running after the open ditch and never looked like being caught, but My Old Piano tracked him to the last and a never say die effort from Greenall got him up to win by a head. Brother Jake Greenall took third on Go For The Gap, held up early on and making good ground they could never get to the leading pair.

The treble for Greenall was achieved by the impressive Phenix Jack in Division1 of the maiden, Phenix Jack who was well clear from flag fall and never looked like been caught, eventually won comfortably by 20 lengths, with brother Jake being the closest pursuer on the locally trained Tracy Corrigan Clark runner and 2-1 favourite Calapocus, who could only manage second. Hailes Hill Lad ran a nice race to fill third for Cherry Coward.

Mrs Corrigan Clark started the day off by winning the Members race with Willywonthe and Steven Charlton, the pair never looked in trouble and were aided mid race by the departure of the fancied Misty Gem, however Dreamaker for the in form Chris Pimlott yard made him work for his victory, but Steve Charlton was looking round on the run in, stayed on well to win by three lengths, with In A Good Way catching the eye a distance back in third on only its second career start.

Cherry Coward achieved the first leg of her double in the Mens Open where the Chris Pimlott horse Johnny Venture was heavily backed to double up on his recent Brocklesby win, however there was no great pace throughout the race and rider Simon Walker attempted to increase the tempo by going to the head of the field at the 14th fence. Le Passing, who was always handy, travelled strongly into the straight and stayed on well under Toby Greenall to win by two and a half lengths, with Johnny Venture chasing him all the way to the line. The eye catcher of the race was Distant Memory in third who had only recently broke its maiden, with Lou Du Moulin Mas benefiting for the blinkers and getting round for fourth.

The Ladies Open saw Blandings Castle improve on its recent third for Pip Tutty, the pair made most of the running, however were headed two out by Encore Cadoudal, but Pip Tutty impressed and never gave up to get back up near the line to beat the experienced Tina Jackson back in second by half a length. One Five Eight stayed on well for Laura Mason and Cherry Coward in third, however the well backed Cop Howe never seemed to be travelling and could only manage fourth.

The day ended with division two of the maiden race which saw the Easterbys attempting to take yet another race, with Snake Rave who was heavily backed into 4-7 favourite, however Fli Mi Son, who caught the eye on his debut, travelled with a great deal of fluency and never put a foot wrong, looked the sure winner out, however Chris Dawson had to work hard alongside Tom Greenall jumping the last and eventually got up to win by a head. Mark Walford was stood down due to a fall, therefore unfortunately missed this winner for his mother Gill Walford. Cherryland filled third after making a lot of the running for Guy Brewer.
