The Gelligaer Farmers Hunt Point-To-Point Steeplechases take place at Lower Machen, near Newport, on Saturday, with the first race at 2pm.

Mark Jackson made every post a winning one on his homebred Samtheman when landing the 2m4f Maiden Race over this picturesque course a fortnight ago when the Tredegar Farmers staged their meeting and will probably try and adopt the same tactics.

Another front running horse down to run in this race is Luke Price's Wheresthepost, who came home six lengths ahead of Freddie Lane at last Saturday's Llangeinor fixture. Course winner John Clayton is another recent winner to be considered.

There are 22 entries for the Mixed Open race and these include the prolific winners Bob Bites Back and Chesnut Annie, the amazing five-year-old Findlay's Find, and the useful Itsalf.

David Gibbs's Cinaman, Roger Willcox's Ace High Blue and Michael McMahon's Princesse De Rome are all previous winners and look the pick of the Confined Race.

If Paul Sheard wins the young horse Maiden Race on his seven-year-old Gouranga Society, the cheers will ring out loud and clear. Last week at the Llangeinor, Gouranga Society was just beaten by Cloran Jack and if putting in a clear round this time will be hard to beat. The last, and indeed only, time Paul visited the winners' enclosure was when he won the Welsh Point-To-Point Grand National back in 2006 on gift horse Itsonlyme.

Racing gets under way with the Members Race for which there are 11 entries, and Jason Parfitt's grey Turbulance might prove too good for Mick's Prospect and Sherfield Don.
