23 March 2011 Preview: Glamorgan - Ystradowen

by Brian Lee

There are 113 Entries for the Glamorgan Hunt Point-to-Point Steeplechases at Ystradowen near Cowbridge on Saturday.

Welsh Point-to-Pointing is on a tremendous high after John Mathias's record breaking six winners from seven rides at last week's Tivyside meeting at Cilwendeg.

With fellow Welshman James Tudor chalking up his 200th winner on Start Royal at the Bicester with Whaddon Chase meeting and Chesnut Annie and Lady Myfanwy both adding to their fine records, Welsh Pointing fans have plenty to smile about.

Racing gets under way at 2.00pm with the Members race, for which there are nine Entries. These include several former National Hunt performers such as Little Shilling and City Affair, both owned by Andrew Lowrie of Optimum Racing and trained by Abbi Vaughan, wife of leading Welsh Trainer Tim Vaughan.

One horse who is taking a long time to get his head in front is Ian Brice's Cool Cliché and his owner's patience could be repaid on this occasion.

There are 31 Entries for the young horse Confined Maiden race, which has a safety factor number of 14; one to note here is Lady Trig. In the older-horse equivalent, Tar Bridge and Nosler catch the eye.

Bosham Mill, Merthyrmawr and Honest Endeavour look best in the Club Members race (16 Entries) and in the Mixed Open (19 Entries) Brinkmanship, who was placed in a couple of bumpers when trained by Heather Dalton, may have the speed to get him around this undulating track.

Pollerton Boy, who lost his Maiden tag over this course, has Backstreet Lad, Tachbury and Howick Maiden winner Fordinkum to contend with in the Restricted race, which has 17 Entries.
