Thorpe Lodge was the venue for both Joe Docker's 100th winner and Jon Rogers's initial success (see Scene & Heard).

Lucy Egerton, 29, opened her account in the Novice Riders' race at Sheriff Hutton on Desert Tommy, who was purchased privately in September from Simon Hart, who wanted him to go to a good home. It was Lucy's uncle, Chris Marriott, who acted as the go-between, recommending to Simon that the now 11-year-old would make a good schoolmaster for his niece.

"He takes a bit of kicking," admitted Lucy, "but the French blinkers [sheepskin cheekpieces] have helped. He did it all - I just sat there." This was just Lucy's fourth ride, and her second of the season, and it earned her the meeting's "ride of the day" award.

She has worked in the film industry for 11 years, and her job as second assistant director is involved mainly with logistics. She has temporarily stepped aside from this in order to concentrate on training her horses, which are stabled with Nicky Tinkler, "But I keep assuring them I'll be back in June!" she laughed.

Weather permitting, she hopes to be in action next at the Sinnington, where she is hoping to have three rides.

25-year-old James Legg was also in the winner's enclosure for the first time after piloting his parents' Glacial Call to victory in the Dodson & Horrell Novice Riders' contest at Ideford Arch.

James, whose father Roger was a very successful rider between the flags, was very involved with the Pony Club until deciding to give up riding at the age of 17. Two years later he had a change of heart, and he made his Pointing debut three seasons ago.

Despite standing 6'1" James still needs to carry around two stone of lead when he rides. He has a Category ‘A' licence and is hoping to get his Cat ‘B' in the next few months. In addition to working on the family dairy farm and training the Pointers he rides out for Helen Nelmes a couple of times a week.

Glacial Call, who he describes as "straightforward in the stable but spirited when she's out," was bought privately four months ago, and is due next to have an entry at Milborne St Andrew.
