FREDDIE LANE: Helped Emily Farr to her first double on Saturday
photo: Alun Sedgmore

20-year-old Emily Farr, who is sponsored by Walters Plant Hire, recorded her first double at Trecoed on Saturday.

She won the Maiden on Freddie Lane and immediately followed up in the Ladies' Open on Little Miss Monty, with both winners home-bred by her parents Ross and Shan. Emily broke her elbow in four places in a fall at Ystradowen at the end of March and had returned to race-riding just five days previously at Bonvilston.

Emily, who has been riding out for Pat Eddery, is an equine science student at Oxford Brookes University, and is involved with that establishment's drama productions. At the weekend she will be attending the Glamorgan Young Farmers' Club rally and is hoping that her singing and dancing skills will help her club Maendy win through to the Royal Welsh Show in July.

Trecoed was also the venue for the initial success of Darach Skelly, 19, who took the Hunt race on Merdeka. Darach, who comes originally from Limerick, has been working for Marc Barber for the past seven months, and it was Marc who found Merdeka for the Skelly family through his association with Mark Gichero.

It was due to a link through trainer Tom Gretton, with whom both Marc's father and Darach's father have a horse, that the teenager came to the Barber yard. He intends to stay on next season, and hopes that more rides will come his way.
