25 January 2012 Preview: North Norfolk Harriers - Higham

by James Crispe

Trainer Fleur Hawes could be the woman to follow at the North Norfolk Harriers Point-To-Point at Higham on Sunday (January 29) as she has leading candidates for the two Open races.

Hawes, from Bressingham, near Diss, could be represented by her recent Ampton runner-up Star Double in the 11-entry Mens Open, and the Ladies equivalent includes the Hawes-trained Pouilly among its 19 entries. Pouilly goes particularly well at this venue but he may need to be somewhere near his best if he is to hold off the likes of the former high class National Hunt performer Qozak, and Rocklandslad, who journeyed all the way from his Bristol base to win at Higham 11 months ago.

Pouilly is also engaged in the Countryside Alliance Club Members Race, but this could prove to be the hottest event on the card with the likes of Foulstons Ruler, Law Court and last term's three-time course and distance winner, Mountain Emperor, among his 22 potential rivals.

Newmarket-based jockey James Owen is in fine form at present and continued making up for the time he lost with a serious injury last season with a winning double in Lincolnshire last Sunday. His best chance of taking his tally for the campaign to four could come in the opening Maiden Race where the 24 possibles include Macklin, who would have won for Owen at Cottenham on New Year's Eve but for veering wildly to his left on the home bend.

Overall, 103 horses have been entered for a six-race card which gets under way at noon and runs through until 2.30pm when Stress and the recent Barbury Castle winner, Topthorn, are among 12 entries for the Restricted Race.

Higham is just to the west of the A12 between Colchester and Ipswich using the B1068 turn-off towards Stoke-by-Nayland, post code CO7 6LE. Admission will be charged at £10 per head with under 17s free.
