28 May 2009 Hunter Chasers & Point-to-Pointers 2009 Quiz Results

by Weatherbys Chase Staff

At long last, it's the moment everyone has been waiting for - the results of the 2009 Hunter Chasers & Point-to-Pointers Annual Quiz!

Sadly, due to dwindling interest (there were only two entrants for the Scholarship Quiz), this is the last quiz in it's present format for the time being. Many thanks to all those that have supported it down the years - especially to quizmaster Brian Armstrong and his encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport.

Quiz Prizewinners

Perhaps fittingly for the very last Scholarship Quiz, the winner was perennial contender Henry Franklin, who edged out David Potter 30-29 in an epic duel. Henry receives the 2010 Loose Leaf subscription, many congratulations to him (again!).

J. Rowlands from Pontyclun, Mid-Glamorgan, was the winner of the Enthusiasts Quiz. He or she (for there was no first name supplied!) receives a copy of the 2010 Hunter Chasers & Point-to-Pointers Annual.

  20. Highworth won the 1970 Cheltenham Foxhunter while his namesake won the Berks and Bucks Draghounds Restricted at Kingston Blount for Johnny Manners on 5th May 1984.
  21. Dawn Run appeared in the racecard as an entry for the Haydon Restricted at Corbridge on 15th March 1986. It was mistake for Dawn Row, who was in second place when carried out by a loose horse at the 11th in Division III.
  22. Jackie Dun (aboard subsequent 1958 National Hunt Chase winner Spud Tamson) beat her twin sister Jill Brewis (Salt Peter) in the Duke Of Buccleuch's and Jedforest Adjacent Ladies' race at Friars Haugh on 23rd March 1957. 1960 Grand National winner Merryman II was unplaced.

As always, we checked all of the answers given and found the odd gremlin in the questions and some interesting alternatives:

Question 11:     Thatilldo is desribed in the 1971 Annual as the only horse to appear in both Annuals, but Henry correctly pointed out that "He was not the only horse to appear in both Annuals, this feat was also achieved by G.L.P. (Prickly - Glenside Lass) Owned in 1960 by the Exors. Of the late Mr A.Eubank (Cumberland) & in 1971 by Mr H.S.Mumford (Atherstone)". David also identified G.L.P. and also quite correctly pointed out that Mar Letoh also fulfilled the criteria.

Question 16:     Henry gave the right answer but added a very similar alternative that almost, but not quite, fitted the criteria: "Note: in a similar situation in the 1971 Bisley & Sandhurst & Mr Goschens Hunt Race, Master Miller appeared to everyone bar the Judge to beat Abdication by up to one & a half lengths but was adjudged to have been beaten by a neck, while Abdication's rider was claiming he had been beaten by his 7lb penalty, the Owner/rider of Master Miller objected to the Judges verdict, her deposit was returned".

Question 22:     This was the crucial question. Henry provided the expected answer but David suggested the 1958 running of the Duke Of Buccleuch's and Jedforest Adjacent Ladies' race at Friars Haugh where Ashtwig (Miss Frances Landale) beat Dunboy II (Mrs Pat Hall), with Merryman II unplaced. Dunboy II dead-heated for the 1953 Cheltenham Foxhunter and Merryman II fitted the Grand National criteria, but Frances Landale and Pat Hall are not related. In fact Pat Hall is the older sister of twins Jackie Dun and Jill Brewis, the subjects of the original question.

Question 25:     Henry quite rightly pointed out that Myway won four of her first 19 (not 18) point-to-points in 1961 and 1962.
