RHYS HUGHES: hanging up his boots

Reigning Welsh champion Rhys Hughes has made the decision to hang up his boots.
"I've been thinking about it for some time," he admitted. "I don't feel that I'm 100% committed any longer, and I just don't get the buzz that I used to from riding a winner. I've achieved the three things I really wanted - to be Welsh champion, to ride a winner under Rules and to ride at Liverpool."
He rode his first winner on Beauchamp Oracle at Maisemore Park in 2004, and his final tally was 74 between the flags plus eight under Rules.
Rhys, assistant to Tim Vaughan, hopes to train in the future, but in the meantime he will keep his links with the amateur sport as a member of the Gelligaer Point-to-Point committee, and by helping Tim's wife Abbi with her Pointers.
