27 September 2010 New Sponsorship Scheme Announced For Point-to-Point Riders
by Weatherbys Chase Staff
Britain's Point-to-Point Riders can gain sponsorship for the first time when the new season opens on November 28th.
In a move piloted by the Point-to-Point Authority [PPA], Riders can gain backing worth up to £950 to pay for equipment and licences. In return they must place sponsors' names on breeches and/or the neck of polo undershirts.
Heather Kemp of the PPA, said: "Anything that helps Riders enter Pointing and stay in it longer is good for the sport. The scheme is optional, but many Riders are on tight budgets and gaining sponsorship could make a significant difference.
"Our sport is now part of a structure that enables young Riders to start in pony racing, add to their education in Point-to-Points and then try racing under Rules - some will become professional jockeys. Sponsorship will be particularly helpful for these young Riders on low incomes."
Amateurs who take advantage of the scheme can use their sponsorship to pay for kit such as helmets, body protectors and saddles, but also for their Riders' qualification certificates [similar to a professional jockey's licence] or the medicals occasionally required to gain an RQC. It cannot be used for fines payable to the British Horseracing Authority, or general work/exercise clothing.
Money cannot be given directly to Riders, for this would compromise their amateur status - a minimum of £300 and maximum of £950 per season can be paid into a Riders' sponsorship scheme bank account run by the PPA which will order goods on behalf of Riders from designated stockists. A yearly administration fee of £30 plus VAT will apply. (Note: the scheme is separate from any sponsorship a Rider may gain for taking part in races under Rules, for which fees are paid to the Amateur Jockeys' Association.)
Britain's most successful Point-to-Point rider, Julian Pritchard, who retired in 2007 after riding 384 winners, said: "Any financial help for Riders is a good thing," while three-time champion Richard Burton, said: "People don't realise how costs mount up - it could be a big help for many, particularly those youngsters who don't have wealthy backgrounds."
