11 March 2009 Preview: Ross Harriers - Garnons

Racing enthusiasts will be beating the post-Cheltenham blues this Sunday with a visit to the Ross Harriers Point-to-Point.

The meeting has received 179 entries for the seven races on Sunday's card and is looking forward to an afternoon of hotly competitive sport.

The Intermediate Race for Novice Riders is a dual qualifier, with the first three horses and riders past the post becoming eligible for the Dodson & Horrell PPORA Final in May, while the winning horse (unless it's a four-year old) will qualify for the Red Mills Championship Final at Cheltenham's Hunter ‘Chase meeting. The successful young jockeys will also score points towards the prestigious Harley Racing Novice Riders series.

A couple of course winners at the recent well-attended South Herefordshire fixture will be hoping to repeat their victories. The Salad Dodger, owned by Kingsland-based men David Barrington and John Price, and Kelda Wood's Shaft's Chance both handled the undulating track very well, and it's likely that the conditions on Sunday will be similar.

The picturesque Garnons course (HR4 7JU) is the perfect backdrop for an enjoyable family day out at the races, and can be found at Byford, eight miles west of Hereford on the A438 Kington road.
