19 January 2011 Preview: Royal Artillery - Larkhill

by Brian & Gill Armstrong

DESCRIPTION: could clash with Theatre Diva again

Larkhill looks set to host another top class day's racing with the Royal Artillery meeting this Saturday, 22nd January. There is an excellent Entry of 138 for the seven-race card, first race 11.00am.

Roulez Cool, winner of last season's Horse & Hound Cup and a leading fancy for Cheltenham's Christie's Foxhunter in March, heads the 25 Entries for the Mens Open. Opposition includes the prolific Kiama, an early faller here a fortnight ago, along with Whizzaar, a stalwart of Richard Woollacott's championship winning stable and likely to be suited by the Larkhill track.

Godfrey Maundrell, who reached the 150-career winner mark at the Larkhill Racing Club fixture, has entered his course specialist Lisadell King, who held every chance when falling at the last in the John Corbet Cup at Stratford in May. Roulez Cool is fancied to repeat last season's success for the Waley-Cohen family. Horsham Lad, winner of four races last season and Gentle George, who ran on strongly when fourth in the 2010 Christie's Foxhunter, may be the two for the minor places.

The Ladies Open has attracted 19 Entries including Description and Theatre Diva, who were first and second here a fortnight ago and former Paul Nicholls chasers Hoo La Baloo - runner-up in Sandown's bet365 chase in April - and Kicks For Free, already a dual winner for Angela Rucker this season. Surenaga, who never quite got on terms with Picaroon at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday, is another contender, as is Coronation Cup winner Coombe Hill. Hoo La Baloo and Kicks For Free may lead the market but Description and Theatre Diva are selected to fight out the finish again.

The 37 Intermediate Entries include impressive Larkhill Racing Club winners Dammam and Dualla Lord. The Waley-Cohens have chances of a double with Chaddesley winner Rumbavu, but the suggestion is course winner Timeshift, who recorded a fast time when returning to the Pointing arena at Black Forest Lodge in November.

The Richard Barber stable notched a double here two weeks ago so Oscarslad is sure to be supported for the three mile Maiden. Strawberry Hill, Tregaro and Trueflyingcolours may be three debutants to consider for the 2m4f contest.

The meeting opens with the King's Troop RHA Club Members race, which is always a difficult betting heat. Blackadder was a lucky winner last season after two rivals departed at the last but is the sporting suggestion to follow up. Stan and Sally Rawlins' Righteous Glory should have every chance against Godfrey Maundrell's choice from Lisadell King and Maglinn River in the Hunt Members race.

The course is found about five miles NW of Amesbury on Salisbury Plain, reached off the A303, A345 or A360. First race 11.00am. Admission is £15 per car + driver; £5 each additional adult, £5 pedestrians.
