A bumper entry for Charing Point-to-Point this Sunday (January 30th) promises big fields and exciting racing.
With 29 horses entered, the Southern Counties Fuels Club Conditions race should be hotly contested with the promising Peadar from Simon Tindall's stable taking on the Detling winner In The System (David Phelan), with Philip York's High Toby also in the reckoning.
Rose and Hannah Grissell plan to bring seven from their Brightling yard. Most of them ran at Detling and will be better for it, whilst the lightly raced Tobougg Welcome will be making his seasonal debut under Philip Hall in the Restricted. Hall also takes the ride on The Grumpy Bee, who ran well for a long way at Detling, in the Maiden, as well as bringing two from his own yard - Tommy Thunder for the Club race and newcomer Adept Approach for the 2m4f Maiden.
Amongst the eight being brought from Hampshire by Jenny Gordon is the Larkhill open winner Description. "I've yet to persuade the Owner, but I would love to win the Penny Peate Ladies Open," said Jenny. Presenting Express and Honours Dream are set to run in the Conditions race, with Launde and Top Ram in the Mens Open, And Your Point Is in the three mile Maiden and Baroque Star and Valvigneres in the shorter version.
Trainer Nick Pearce also brings Our Poppy Day (2m4f Maiden) and Scholar George (Restricted) and will choose between the two Opens for Letterman. He also rides Caroline Holliday's Chosen Few, a five-year-old with Irish Point-to-Point form from last Spring.
Amongst Philip York's rides will be Freddies Return, an ex-Jim Old 10-year-old making his debut between the flags. He has to contest the Mens Open having won a 2m6f Beginners' Chase at Towcester last March. He is owned by Messrs Gurney, Fisher and Rhodes, whose spokesman said they are "hopeful, although he is not the most straightforward". Freddies Return will be up against reigning champion Peter Bull on Master T.
Charing racecourse is located beside the A20 just outside Charing village, which is halfway between Maidstone and Ashford. The code for satnavs is TN27 0JD. The first race is at 12.30pm and admission is £10 per person with car parking and children under 16 free.
