25 May 2011 Preview: South Devon Hunts Club - Ideford Arch
by Lucy Johnson
The Point-to-Point season is drawing to a conclusion with just five meetings left in the Devon and Cornwall area including two this weekend.
The first is the South Devon Hunt Club's rescheduled meeting at Ideford Arch on Saturday where the six races get underway at 2pm. Secretary Amy Harris said "We had an inspection on Monday and the going was firm, good to firm in places and we are watering everyday to produce good going."
Seven are entered in the South Devon Hunts Club Members Race including the Gail Heywood-trained Here's Johnny, who was the winner of a competitive Confined Race at Upcott Cross in April. He could face tough competition from the consistent Strong Weld who has rattled up four wins this season.
The grand veteran Quizzling has won three this season and he's entered in the Novice Riders Race. Also entered is Mister Moonax who ran well at Holnicote to finish second and a win would prove a welcome tonic for Richard Hawkins who is currently recovering from a serious head injury sustained in a fall at Taunton in April. The gelding is ridden by his sister Hannah and owned and trained by their father Andrew.
Entries in the Mixed Open include another brilliant veteran in the shape of Paddy The Piper who has scored five successes this season all with promising young jockey Michael Heard on board.
Hereweareagain could add to his Restricted success in the Intermediate while in the Maiden Vingt Sur Vingt has gone close on two occasions and could make it third time lucky.
Entry is £20 per car load and as well as the racing a hound parade will take place. There will be bookies, a licensed bar, catering and tradestands. The course is situated off the A380 on the Chudleigh intersection postcode TQ13 0AE.
