29 April 2009 Preview: Zetland - Witton Castle

by John Milburn

The Zetland has received 146 entries for their meeting on Bank Holiday Monday and no doubt the ground should be ideal. The 7 race card begins at 2 o'clock with the Hunt Members race, and in recent years, this has been a race not to miss.

The Members race has only 5 entries but looks wide open. The Cameron family have two entries; last year's winner Prairie Storm will need to find his best again, whilst Captain Bruce has improved very well and should go close. Loaded Dice will also go well if he is at his best, however Lauderdale, who finished a head in front of Luksar at Fife, can win on that form.

The Intermediate race usually sees some progressive horses taking part. Accordion Roilelet has won two this season, but it is yet to be seen what he has beaten. Father Owen can continue his upward progression; Lord Saar has an excellent record in points but has his toughest task yet here. Quinta De Lobo can have a say along with The Viking who looks to be back at his best after winning a very competitive Restricted last time. However the race looks between the consistent Abandon Ship and also Persian Prince, who lost his maiden tag here at the Old Raby.

The Restricted has a large amount of entries. Blazing Bull was impressive at Charm Park and will improve, Cherryland won easily at Mordon, whilst Chummys Double never came out of second gear at Easingwold before throwing away his chance. Forge Valley looks short of stamina, whilst Northern Revoque won well at Whittington and can have a say. Oaklands Bobby was unlucky last time, whilst Oriel Flyer could have a squeak. Rich Hill, who won a good race at Dalton Park, is the selection.

The Mens Open looks an interesting event. Sonevafushi will most likely win if he takes part; Belem Ranger has won here and is a good hunter chaser, whilst Lou Dou Moulin Mas showed some more sparkle last time. Network Oscar won a weak Grimthorpe with ease, whilst Queenies Girl is flying at the moment at the ripe old age of 13. However the trailblazing Baallybrakes looks as good as ever, and following an unfortunate incident last time, can gain compensation.

The Ladies Open looks a strong renewal. Bobby Buttons could have a say if at his best, whilst Blandings Castle may be saved for another week. Deja Vu looks a good stayer and would have a place chance; Sea Scout is a very classy horse but has questions to answer after his recent disappointing run of seconds. The race looks as though it can go the way of Delfinia, who will be suited by this course.

The first division of the Maiden has 22 entered. In the first division the selection is Calopocus, who has been going very close in some competitive races, including a head second to Apollo Saturn Five recently. The second division looks more competitive and could go the way of Pop Play Again, with Special Portrait the main danger.
