A quartet of recent British point-to-pointers head to Shropshire today and Ludlow’s seven-race card.
Switch Hitter was the impressive winner of a maiden race at Maisemore Park last year for Fran Nimmo’s Warwickshire stable, and was subsequently sold to bloodstock agent Tom Malone and trainer Paul Nicholls for £120,000 at Tattersalls’ Cheltenham April Sale.
The son of Scorpion took part in one bumper last season for Nicholls when fifth of 12 in the colours of Clive Hitchings’ Hills Of Ledbury, and today he tackles a novices’ hurdle (3.55) for the first time. Harry Cobden rides (later declared a non runner). He is joined in the race by Does He Know, who won at Charm Park for Cherry Coward’s stable in April last year and has finished second twice since over hurdles for Kim Bailey’s yard.
Ludlow’s mares’ bumper (5.35) which completes the afternoon meeting involves two former British pointers. Does He Know’s stablemate Getaweapon makes her first start for Bailey’s yard having won a point-to-point Flat race at Milborne St Andrew last year in the colours of Dorset trainer Chris Barber and bloodstock agent Ed Bailey. Martin ‘Fly’ McIntyre rode Getaweapon on that occasion, while David Bass holds the reins today.
Also in today’s mares’ bumper is You Too Bonny Lass (pictured above), who remains in the ownership of Don Constable but makes her first start for trainer Stuart Edmunds. Formerly trained by Heidi Brookshaw, You Too Bonny Lass bolted up in a point-to-point Flat race at Hereford before finishing unplaced in a similar race at Aintree. She was out of luck when making her debut over fences at Cottenham last season, falling with four to jump when in contention. Conditional jockey Bryan Carver, a former point-to-point rider who partnered the mare in her first two races, is back in the saddle today.
