Latenight and Rose Iland are the belles of bonus

  • Posted: Tuesday, 1st June 2021

It has been a good few days for the teams behind the mares Latenightfumble and Rose Iland.

At Stratford on Friday Latenightfumble finished second in a bumper and collected a £2,000 bonus from the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Its 3-2-1 Bonus was created to promote the racing and breeding of fillies in Britain with up to £3,000 on offer to any such filly or mare who contested three point-to-point bumpers held on licensed courses.

At Aintree last month the Tom Ellis-trained Latenightfumble collected a £1,000 bonus – in addition to prize money – for finishing third, while at Stratford her second place behind the gelding Fountains Chief earned her £2,000. Had she won she would have collected £3,000 through the 3-2-1 Bonus and a further £5,000 through her eligibility for the Great British Bonus Scheme, which is another incentive for filly and mare owners.

Also at Stratford there were celebrations at the conclusion of two further series finals. Deans Road, a stablemate of Latenightfumble, landed the Skinner’s Ladies Final under Gina Andrews, while The Bonny Boy, who is trained in Suffolk by Ruth Pennock and was ridden by Alice Stevens, won the Print Concern Restricted Point-to-Point Final.

Tim Underwood of Print Concern created the restricted series as a way of highlighting the work of the NHS and thanking it for its role in fighting the Coronavirus pandemic. During the evening Underwood presented the NHS with a cheque for £10,000, money collected in fees from owners whose horses were entered in Print Concern races during the current season.

Rose blooms for Colletts and Slatter

At Chaddesley Corbett on Monday Rose Iland leapt to the head of the points-based Jockey Club’s Maiden Mares Series when recording her first victory. Trained in Gloucestershire by Jake Slatter for owners Jim and Sue Collett (all pictured main photo above, with rider James King), Rose Iland had finished third and then second three times in maiden races prior to Monday’s triumph, and because it came in one of the Jockey Club’s series of races it triggered points she earned earlier in the season.

A seven-year-old daughter of Fame And Glory, Rose Iland now has 11pts, three more than the Ben Clarke-trained So Socksy. Jason Warner’s Edabean missed the chance to reach 11pts when fourth in a restricted race at Bratton Down on Saturday.

The series continues until the final day of the season on Sunday week, and the winner will receive a memento and a cheque for £500. In addition they can double any prize money they earn when making their debut at a Jockey Club-owned licensed racecourse.
