The Point-to-Point Authority (PPA) is introducing alcohol testing for jockeys as part of an ongoing commitment to safety and integrity in the sport. This initiative aligns with the British Horseracing Authority’s (BHA) regulatory standards and will be conducted by Abbott Toxicology at selected fixtures throughout the remainder of the season.
A number of fixtures will include alcohol testing and on these days, all jockeys riding will be required to take part. The process is straightforward:
When handing in your licence and medical book, you’ll be asked to complete a breath test. If the initial test detects alcohol, a confirmatory test will be carried out in a private and discreet setting. Testing must be completed before weighing out.
Jockeys riding on the day must ensure their alcohol level does not exceed 17 micrograms per 100ml of breath. Alcohol levels can fluctuate up or down, so a second test is taken within 15 minutes to allow for this. If a jockey’s level is at or above this threshold, the Stewards will stand them down from riding for the rest of the day.
The PPA would like to emphasise that this initiative is intended to support jockeys and promote awareness rather than catch individuals out. The aim is to encourage a safe and responsible environment for everyone involved in point-to-point racing.
We appreciate the cooperation of all jockeys in helping to uphold the safety and integrity of our sport.
